L’obiettivo dello Sfregiato è di predare la città, lasciando come sempre agli efferati compagni carta bianca per sfogare le proprie pulsioni più infami, approfittando della situazione delle forze in campo, favorevoli alle truppe occidentali rafforzate dai temibili vichinghi di Re Sigurd I, che per la prima volta appaiono agli occhi arabi e crociati; uomini possenti dai lunghi capelli biondi, armati di enormi scuri da guerra, affiancati da un gruppo di donne guerriere, le celebri ‘amazzoni scandinave’ skjaldmær, guidate dalla leader Jórunn, sanguinaria ninfomane psicopatica protetta da una particolare guardia del corpo: un enorme orso bruno da novecento chili di stazza. Per l’aiuto per la conquista di Sidone, Baldovino I, Re di Gerusalemme, ha promesso a Sigurd e ai suoi norvegesi un frammento della vera croce di Gesù, una reliquia di grande potere. Ma non tutto andrà secondo i piani, e Vessel e i suoi luogotenenti fuori di testa (Portanero, Serafino, Tarasios, Bruma, il Nadruviano e nuovi arruolati, tra i quali Badra, pericolosa ex meretrice, dovranno vedersela con la furia di Jorunn e gli oscuri piani del Doge di Venezia, Ordelaffo Falier, coi suoi creativi postriboli mobili, ossessionato di raggiungere il tempio dedicato al culto di Eshmun, divinità fenicia della guarigione, situato due chilometri a nordest di Sidone, penetrare nelle otto stanze del santuario sotterraneo e far sedere sul Trono dei Serpenti il deforme, mostruoso figlio Girolamino, la cui vista è in grado di far impazzire le genti.
